A distance-selling offer is a legal document, too
Article 19 of the GPSR applies to any offer for sale by distance means, including a typical online marketplace or webshop listing, made available to a consumer in the EU. It sets out specific information the offer has to display before a purchase is completed, independent of the platform used to publish it.
Manufacturer details
The offer must show the manufacturer's name or registered trade name or trademark, together with a postal address and an electronic address at which the manufacturer can be reached.
Responsible-person details, when the manufacturer is outside the EU
Where the manufacturer is established outside the EU, the offer must also show the name, postal address, and electronic address of the responsible person carrying the Article 16 role for that product. This information sits alongside the manufacturer's details, not in place of them.
Product image and identification
The offer needs an image of the product, together with its type or another identifier that lets a buyer recognise the specific product rather than only the product category. A generic category photograph without a matching identifier does not meet this requirement on its own.
Warnings and safety information
Any warning or safety information that other applicable EU rules require for the product category has to appear in the offer itself, not only inside the packaging or an instruction manual the buyer only sees after the purchase is made.
Marketplaces implement the rule; they do not set it
Amazon, Etsy, and Shopify each build these fields into their own listing forms, product templates, and seller dashboards in their own way, and each publishes its own guidance for sellers on where to enter this information. The underlying requirement, however, comes from Article 19 itself: filling in a platform's fields correctly does not by itself satisfy the regulation if the information behind them is missing or wrong.
How Grüner Baum GmbH reviews a listing
As part of a product review, we check a sample listing for the manufacturer block, the responsible-person block where it applies, an identifying product image, and the warning or safety information the product category requires, before advising whether the offer is ready to publish.
